BREAKING: MURRIETA: Murrieta councilman Alan Long enters plea agreement on DUI charges

I was arrested and convicted of a DUI after not using my turn signal. No accident and no injuries. I lost my license for 1 year. I would have needed to put in a Ignition Interlock Device to drive in the second year.  Standard probation for year three and I got to reinstate my license with another 3 years filing SR-22. I did 48 hours in jail. Plus fines and fees.

Even with Mr. Long’s 180 days of electronic confinement (whatever that entails) he gets to stay in his home and sleep in his bed. He can still make money on the internet and have all his supplies delivered to him. I don’t see this as a punishment for people with money and access. I guess he will have to step down again from his Council position unless he can do that over skype or some type of video conference. Maybe he can persuade the city to adopt that.

What is irritating is the message from the state that we are getting tough on DUI. After reading the laws they sound really tough. Something that politicians always support. Then when they get into trouble, a mistake without malice but a simple error, they are able to come out of this better than most if not all of their constituents. He should get honest. If the law is to onerous for him to deal with then he should say that in all of his future dealings. It is so blatant that people with connections and money get special treatment.

He should tell us how unfair the law is and educate us how to deal with the criminal justice system. So when we, God forbid, are charged with felony DUI with extended circumstances, I serious hurt and 3 regular hurt. We can be assured of getting the same punishment he got.
